External Recognition
While we are driven by outcomes, not awards, external recognition helps to maintain our momentum and communicate the success of our activities to our stakeholders. The table below summarises the external recognition we have received at a corporate level during the reporting period 2005/06. In addition, many of our operations received recognition for excellence at a local or regional level.

Company of the Year 2005 - UK Business in the Community Awards

Our commitment to responsible business practice was recognised with the Company of the Year Award 2005 at the Business in the Community (BITC) National Awards for Excellence. The BITC is a unique movement in the UK of 800 member companies whose purpose is to inspire, challenge, engage and support business in continually improving its positive impact on society. BHP Billiton is the first company in the extractive industries to receive the award and is the first recipient recognised for its global activities. The award was announded 5 July 2005 and we included reference to it in our previous (2005) Sustainability Report. |

2005 Prime Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Community Business Partnerships (Australia) – Winner Special Award Impact on Community |
The special award recognised BHP Billiton’s partnerships with the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre, the Foundation for Young Australians, the Melbourne Business School, the Powerhouse (Victoria) and Reconciliation Australia. This strategic alignment enabled BHP Billiton and its partners to achieve a range of outcomes for young indigenous people, while sharing a common objective of supporting and fostering indigenous leadership and governance. |
